What is Glutathione?
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, and is the most abundant intracellular low-molecular-weight thiol in mammalian cells. It cycles between reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) forms, serving as the cell's master antioxidant and a critical cofactor for glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and other detoxification enzymes. How Glutathione works (research context)
In cellular models glutathione functions primarily through its free thiol group, directly scavenging reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and serving as an electron donor for glutathione peroxidase-mediated reduction of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides.
