Description
What is Methylene Blue?
Methylene blue is a heterocyclic aromatic phenothiazine compound first synthesized in 1876. Beyond its classical histological staining role, it is widely studied in laboratory research as a redox-cycling agent that can accept and donate electrons at the mitochondrial level, alternating between oxidized (blue) and reduced (leucomethylene blue, colorless) states. Supplied as oral tablets for reference laboratory study.
How Methylene Blue works (research context)
In research models methylene blue acts at the mitochondrial electron-transport chain, shuttling electrons by accepting them from NADH and donating them to cytochrome c, effectively bypassing Complex I and III blockages. This redox cycling is associated with enhanced mitochondrial respiration, reduced oxidative stress, and upregulation of cytochrome c oxidase activity. It is also studied as an inhibitor of soluble guanylate cyclase and nitric oxide synthase at higher concentrations.
